Zombie-Filled Fun: The Best Halloween Board Games for Families

Halloween board games

Halloween is one of the best times to bring your family together for a spooky, laugh-filled game night. From creepy card games to haunted mansion adventures, these Halloween board games are perfect for October nights. Below you’ll find gameplay details, age ratings, number of players, and game times for each title.

Zombie Chicken

  • Game Time: 35 minutes

  • Age Rating: 9+

  • Players: 1-4

About as zany as this title sounds, this is a zany card game. During the day you are building defenses to defend against these possessed chickens that come out at night. The game is played with a day and a night phase.

During the morning and afternoon each player

  • Can choose to discard one card
  • Place two cards
  • Draw two cards to finish their turn

During the night phase:

  • Players are dealt cards from the night deck, where they need to defend themselves against the zombie chickens and the random events.

The intensity builds as each new night phase more night cards are dealth, leaving you with an onslaught of zoombie chickens. The game ends when all players are our of life cards and the last farmer standing is the winner.

Frequently asked question

Q. “How can we keep track of which night we’re on or follow our progress during Zombie Chicken?”
A. Sweet Bros Game created a simple Day/Night Tracker printout to help families easily follow along. You can download it anytime from the Zombie Chickens page on our website.

Q.Is there a limit to how many stacks a player can keep on their farm?”
A. There’s no limit at all—it’s your farm! You’re free to build as few or as many stacks as you’d like.

It’s a brilliant game with “family-friendly” zombie chicken artwork. This intensity-building game has three ways to play—competitively, as a cooperative game, and as a solo player game—keeping everyone on their toes, making it ideal for a family Halloween board game night.

Couch Skeletons: Halloween Board Game

How to Play Couch Skeletons - Halloween Board Games
  • Game Time: 5-10 minutes

  • Age Rating: 9+

  • Players: 2 Player Game

How to Play Couch Skeletons

  1. Draw Cards

At the start of your turn, you can draw up to three cards from the top of your deck so your hand is back to three cards. You can skip drawing if you already have three cards or if you’d rather keep the ones you have.

  1. Play Skeletons

Your main aim is to place skeleton cards onto the couch cushions from your hand. You can play a skeleton card if it follows one of these two rules:

  • On Top Rule: Place a skeleton card on top of another on the same cushion if its number is one higher than the card beneath. Example: put a skeleton “7” on top of a skeleton “6.”
  • Beside Rule: Place a skeleton card next to another card on the cushion if it’s one higher or one lower than the card beside it. Example: a skeleton “8” next to a skeleton “7” or “6.”

You can place up to three skeleton cards per turn on the couch cushions, as long as they follow the rules.

  1. Discard Pile

To finish your turn, discard one card. If your hand is empty, just end your turn without discarding.

Halloween Fun Charades

  • Game Time: Flexible, about 30 minutes per round

  • Age Rating: 6+

  • Players: 2-6

This game takes the classic party favorite and adds a Halloween twist. Inside the box are hundreds of spooky prompts—from “haunted house” to “mummy dance”—and everyone takes turns acting them out without speaking. Team members must guess the prompt before the timer runs out.

This is a great family game for Halloween, as it is inclusive for everyone, as there is no reading required. The cards feature images that are easily identified and can be acted out without needing to read.

I do recommend that parents offer to help younger kids with acting ideas and hints so everyone can enjoy the Halloween board games together.

This Halloween board game is below $10 so could be used as a goodie bag treat.

I love Charades in that it’s a great game to help bring you out of your shell. It’s good to be able to laugh at yourself and a great confidence booster for children learning to be in front of people.

Goosebumps The Board Game

How to Play Goosebumps: The Card Game of Monster Mayhem.

  • Game Time: 30–45 minutes

  • Age Rating: 8+

  • Players: 2–6

Goosebumps – The Card Game of Monster Mayhem is a fast-paced, family-friendly card game that’s easy to learn, quick to set up, and packed with monster-battling fun for all ages.

Set Up the Game:
First, place the six Trophy cards to the side—these are what you’re aiming to win. The game runs for six rounds, with each round awarding one Trophy. Shuffle all Monster, Slappy, and Mastermind cards together and deal them out. Each player places their cards face down in a draw pile—no peeking allowed.

Get to Know the Cards:
Each Monster card has six abilities (Strength, Endurance, Fright, Magic, Mayhem, Intelligence), rated from 0 to 10. Slappy and Mastermind cards are special and can act as either a 1 or 9, making them powerful wild cards.

Start Playing:
In Round 1, everyone battles using the Strength ability. The first player flips their top card and declares “high” or “low.” All other players then flip their top card. The highest (or lowest) value wins depending on what’s called. The winner collects the cards and starts the next battle by declaring “high” or “low.”

Progress Through Rounds:
As you move from round to round, switch to the next ability in order—Endurance for Round 2, Fright for Round 3, and so on—until all six Trophies are claimed. If there’s a tie, use sudden-death draws until a winner emerges.

Winning the Game:
After all six rounds, the player with the most Trophy cards is the overall winner. Watch out for Monster Mashups (two identical Monsters in one battle)—they’ll send all the cards to the discard pile and switch the “high/low” privilege to the next player.
