So, of course, now, I feel a social responsibility now to say: Please drink responsibility and look after your friends and family. Check out the blog How to Host a Fun Games Night for tips.

How to Play Tipsy Land

Move around the board by rolling the dice and completing the tasks.  In addition, there are two community spaces, with cards which are ; “Never Have I” and “Pick Someone Who“… Pick someone who would decorate their house with 10,000 lights, or never have I—put my Christmas tree up before Thanksgiving or tried to sit on Santa’s lap. While the general board game tiles have tasks like “Pick someone to take 3 sips” or “Everyone drinks,” see where this game is going? Fun-filled, potentially drunken laughter, which makes it one of the most fabulous Christmas themed board games.

Letters to Santa

Originally introduced in 2012 as Love Letters by AEG-Z-Man Games, it won many awards for best family game, highly recommended, best party board game, and more. Since then, Love Letters or Letters to Santa have continued to have many versions and constantly gets better and better.

Objective of this Christmas Themed Board Game

The primary aim of the “Letters to Santa” board game is for players to collect and deliver letters and gifts to Santa at the North Pole. Players navigate the game board by drawing letter cards, completing challenges, and gathering items needed to fulfil the wishes of children. The first player to reach the North Pole with their collected letters and gifts wins the game.

How to play Letters to Santa

Shuffle the cards and remove a certain amount depending on the number of competitors.  Everyone is dealt one card only, and draw a second card on your turn.  Place 1 card face down and complete the action.  There is a reference card outlining the actions.  For example, when you discard the Elf, you trade the card in your hand with the card held by another player of your choice. There are 8 action cards; see the full set here.

Great small game for travel, as it will fit into any holiday suitcase.

Off Topic is another great Christmas themed board game for adults, as it has simple rules; there is no right or wrong answer, and its a great conversation starter if you have new people in your group.

Objective

The goal is to be the first to collect a set number of story cards or points by creatively responding to prompts.

How to Play

Shuffle the cards and place them in a stack. Players take turns drawing a prompt card and filling in the blanks with an erasable pen. These cards are put into a bowl. Each player takes a card and guesses who wrote that answer to the prompt.  The person who guesses the most right wins. The game continues until a player reaches the predetermined number of points or story cards, or after a set number of rounds.

It is known for its humor and simply rules and is inclusive with a lighthearted fun but slight competitive edge. This holiday party board game adds a festive approach to the traditional game of Sorry! Not Sorry!.

Objective

Trick your family and friends into saying ‘forbidden’ words. This isn’t your typical card game played around the table. Instead, it’s played in the background within a time frame that suits you.

The game includes 54 cards, 2 rule cards, 8 comical identity cards, and 44 forbidden word cards with over 220 forbidden words, so it always new. Once you have chosen your target, get them to say the forbidden words on that card. E.g. the identity card is “your target is the Foodie” and the forbidden words are “steamy,” “reindeer,” “pie,” etc.

ransom notes party board game

This isn’t a Christmas themed board game per se, but I’ve included this because I think it’s a great game to be played at Xmas time, as it creates a lot of laughs together and is great for larger groups. My teenagers even got involved with this game.

Objective

Basically, make the funniest answer to the prompt card, using only the handful of magnetic words in front of them.

How to Play Ransom Notes

Grab your friends and the more the merrier  to really get the laughs rolling.

First off, each player is given a metal tray and three “pinches” of magnetic words. Don’t stress; a pinch is what anyone thinks.

Next, someone flips a prompt card over and reads its aloud, and everyone then has to put a sentence (in broken English) together in response to the prompt question.

Once everyone has completed their sentence, each person reads their answer aloud.

Spin the box and the player with the box end reading, “you’re the judge,” gets to pick the best answer (winner).

Players then put their used words back into the box and pinch out another set of words.  This winner keeps the prompt card, and the first person to receive 5 prompt cards wins.
