Sushi Go Party: Basic Information

Game Type: Card Drafting, Set Collection

Sushi Go Party is an expanded version of the popular card game Sushi Go and designed by Phil Walker-Harding. It’s a fast-paced, easy-to-learn, and enjoyable drafting card game where players select different types of sushi to create the best meal. The aim is to collect the most points by assembling different sushi combinations.

This game is ideal as a fun card game for players of all ages and is a combination of both strategy and luck. The cute and colorful artwork, paired with the quick gameplay, makes it an attractive option for gamers of all skill levels.

Objective of Sushi Go Party

The main objective of Sushi Go Party is to collect the most points by selecting and passing sushi cards in each round. Players choose cards from their hand, play one, and then pass the remaining cards to the next player. By forming specific sushi combinations, players earn points at the end of each round. The player with the most points after three rounds wins the game.

Setting up

To start, place the board game in the centre of all players.

You then choose a pawn and place that on or near the o space of the game board.

The first time you play, spilt the cards based on type and place each type in a slot in the box.

Collectively, you decide which cards to use.  See “Card Selection” in the rules. Card Selection includes, Party Sampler, Master Menu, Sushi Go or My First Meal etc. These all include a different combination of Sushi rolls, appetizers, specials and desserts.

From the menu tiles, use those that correspond to the chosen cards and place them in their appropriate slots on the board. This allows everyone to see what’s in play and how they work.

Next Shuffle the chosen dessert cards and place them face down on one side of the game board.

Collect the other chosen sets and shuffle well to form a deck. Depending on the number of players, you will mix in a certain number of  desserts cards.  This will vary for each of the three rounds played.

How to play Sushi Go Party

First, pick your card combination to play, which must consist of Nigiri, 1 type of rolls, 3 appertizers, 2 specials, and 1 type of dessert.

If playing with 2-5 players, deal 10 cards to each competitor.

Now is the fun part, there is no turns, each player picks one card from their hand to keep which is placed face down in front of them.  Once everyone has done this, you turn your cards over and pass the remaining cards in your hand to the next person in clockwise rotation.  This continues till all cards are played and there are no cards to pass.

However, if you have a special action card, before you pick up the cards which have been passed onto you, you call out the name of the action card.  Check the guide for a list of the bonus cards and what can be completed.

For example, Chopsticks allows you to take 2 extra cards on a future turn.

If you received any dessert cards place to the side until you have completed the 3 rounds.

Next score all the cards placed.  Check the rules as each card is different.

After scoring, add in the new dessert cards and repeat this for 3 rounds in total.

Cons of Sushi Go Party

Luck-Based Elements: Like a lot of good games, I think you do need an element of luck as a way to keep the game interesting, but for some people it may lead to minor frustrating moments.

Scalability: While it accommodates up to 8 players, it can become a little slower with a large group if players take a long time to choose cards. This isn’t a big deal at all, unless you’re an impatient person 🙂 (like me sometimes).
