How to Play The Mind Card Game: A Step-by-Step Guide

The Mind is a unique and fun cooperative card game that challenges your communication skills and your ability to sync with others. If you’re looking to dive into this minimalist game, here’s everything you need to know about how to play The Mind card game.

The Mind uses a deck of cards numbered from 1 to 100. Players must play these cards in ascending order, but the twist is that you can’t talk, give gesture, or give any clues.

The Objective of The Mind

In The Mind, the objective is to play all the cards in your hand in ascending order from 1 to 100, without any mistakes. You’ll have to rely solely on your instincts and your ability to sync with your fellow players.

The Mind card game is not just about winning—it’s about working as a team. If you can play all the cards correctly without communication, your team wins the level. The higher the level, the harder it gets.

Setup for The Mind Card Game

  • Firstly, shuffle the deck of cards
  • Place lives and throwing stars as per below.

The team starts with a set number of lives and throwing stars, which they place openly on the table. They set the remaining lives and stars aside at the edge of the table for later use if needed.

Next, they stack a specific number of level cards in ascending order, placing them face-up as a deck with level 1 on top. This deck is placed beside the lives and throwing stars cards. Any unused level cards go back into the box.

2 players: levels 1-12 • 2 lives • 1 throwing star

3 players: levels 1-10 • 3 lives • 1 throwing star

4 players: levels 1- 8 • 4 lives • 1 throwing star

How to Play The Mind Card Game

Start of the Game

The game begins with the first level (1). Each player is dealt the number of cards according to the level. For example, at level one, each player gets one card. Players cannot look at each other’s cards or communicate in any way. Then you place one hand on the table in front of you, and once everyone is ready, you then remove your hand. Remember, no talking.

Play the Cards in Ascending Order

The main objective of the game is to play cards in ascending order. Players must play their cards when they believe their number is the lowest remaining card.

For example, if you’re playing at level 2, and you have cards numbered 3 and 10, you should play the 3 as soon as you think it’s the lowest card on the table. You can’t look at other players’ cards, so this requires trusting your intuition.

Mistakes and Lives

If a player plays a card out of order, your team loses a life. However, that game is not over, everyone who has a card in their hand lower than the one placed at the incorrect time, removes them from their hand and the game continues.  The game starts with 3 lives, but players can gain lives back by completing certain levels. Losing all lives results in a game over.

Progressing Through the Levels

After successfully playing all the cards in the first level, you move to the next level. In level two, players receive two cards each. As you progress through the game, the number of cards increases. The game gets more challenging as the number of cards increases and the levels get higher.

” Stop”

If at any time you lose concentration, you can call “stop” and everyone places one hand back on the table and once you have refocussed you remove your hands and continue play.

The Throwing star

The Throwing star is a special action in The Mind card game. You can use it to help you during tough situations and can be used at any time during the game.   You simply raise your hand, and if all players agree the throwing star is used.  At this point, each player discards their lowest card from their hand by plaing it face up0 to the side of the playing area.  This throwing star is then redundant and out of play.

Rewards: Once you successfully complete levels 2,3,5,6,8 and9 you receive one throwing star as a reward. Rewards are also given for completing levels 3, 5, 6, 8, and 9. This is outlined on the bottom of the level card and will be either a life or a throwing star.

The instructions say for the first time to not read the black box information first. However, my husband and I might not have been in the right frame of mind and found it quite frustrating as a beginner because we couldn’t even get past level 2. After reading it, it made the game easier and more enjoyable. I won’t give away the clue here, but just keep this thought in mind: if you are getting frustrated and not enjoying the game, then please read.

Want a further challenge after winning all levels? Play goes into “Blind Mode.” Play continues as above, except all players place their cards face down.
