Easy Guide for Parents

Pick the Right Games
Looking for ways to socialise and worried about gathering friends for game night. We’ve created some tips on how to host a fun games night.
Choose the right board games:
Consider the group’s interests, ages, and skill levels. Have a mix of games for different tastes and lengths of play. Make sure you have at least read the rules or played the game prior so you fully understand how to set up and play. Sitting around and trying to understand the rules with your guests makes for a slow start and not so enjoyable. Check if the game is playable for the number of people who are coming.

Set a date and time:
Set up a group chat and make sure everyone is available and can commit to the time.
Send out invitations:
Let everyone know what to expect, including the games you’ll be playing, any themes, and whether they should bring anything (snacks, drinks, etc.).
Prepare the space:
Clear a table or area large enough for everyone to play comfortably. Good lighting is essential. With friends I play at the kitchen table, but with my family, I like to play on the floor. It makes it more casual, and we grab pillows to lie or sit on.
Gather the supplies:
I do a quick check to make sure all the necessary components for each game are there; including dice, cards, pieces, and rulebooks.
Prepare/Provide snacks and drinks:
Have a variety of options to keep everyone fueled and happy. I always offer both sweet and savoury snacks, as well as alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.
Setting the Mood
Create a welcoming atmosphere:
dim the lights, put on some music, and light some candles to create a relaxed and inviting ambiance.
Set a theme (optional):
I am not a big theme person, but if it’s a certain time of year, eg Christmas, a theme can add an extra layer of fun and excitement. In saying that, I will buy foods or drinks based around a theme, eg Xmas cake, or candy canes etc.
You could, consider a movie night theme, a specific game genre, or a holiday theme. And if you really want to get into the spirit, you could dress up to the theme.
Have entertaining decorations:
Simple decorations like streamers or even themed tablecloths can add a festive touch. This isn’t something I do, but it does add a fun element, for example, if you are inviting families over for a special event, like Halloween. All the children may be getting dressed up, so the adults can.
During the Game Night
Start with a simple game: Begin with a game that is simple to learn and quick to play. This will help everyone get into the spirit of the night.
- My go-to suggestion is Flip 7 as it’s a great fun game to start off with.
- Or a Fast Paced Game adds to the excitement.
Take breaks: It’s important to take breaks throughout the night to stretch, chat, and refuel.
Be a good sport: Everyone should be respectful of each other and the games. Encourage positive sportsmanship and positive attitudes.
Have fun! The most important thing is to relax, have fun, and enjoy spending time with friends and family.
Additional Tips
Keep it casual: Don’t worry about being too formal or competitive. The goal is to have fun and enjoy each other’s company.
Be flexible: Be prepared to change plans if things don’t go as expected. If a game isn’t working out, switch to something else.
Don’t be afraid to try new games: Game night is a great opportunity to try out new games and discover new favorites, but I do recommend you have at least viewed the rules and game play prior.
Take pictures: Capture the fun memories of your game night with some photos.
Remember, the most important thing is to have fun and enjoy the company of your friends and family. A successful game night is all about creating a positive and engaging experience for everyone involved.
