1. Take Gem Tokens
You can collect gems in one of two ways:
- Take 3 different colored gems.
- Take 2 gems of the same color if at least 4 of that color remain in the supply.
For example, you might take one blue, one red, and one green gem.
Alternatively, if there are enough blue gems available, you could take two blue gems.
2. Reserve a Card
If you see a card you really want, you can reserve it.
When reserving a card:
- Take the card into your hand.
- Receive one gold joker token if available. (This stops other players from buying that card).
Gold tokens can substitute for any gem color when making purchases.
Players may reserve up to three cards at a time.
3. Purchase a Development Card
To buy a card, pay the gems shown in its cost.
For example, a card might require:
- 2 Blue
- 1 Green
- 1 White
Once purchased:
- Return the gems to the supply.
- Place the card face-up in front of you.
- Gain its permanent gem bonus.
This permanent bonus reduces the cost of future cards.
Understanding Permanent Bonuses
Permanent bonuses are the heart of Splendor.
Suppose you own:
- 2 Blue bonus cards
- 1 Red bonus card
A future card costing:
- 3 Blue
- 2 Red
would only require:
- 1 Blue gem
- 1 Red gem
Because your bonuses automatically reduce the cost.
As a result, your purchasing power grows throughout the game.
How Noble Tiles Work
Nobles provide bonus Prestige Points.
Each noble tile has specific requirements, such as:
- 4 Blue bonuses
- 4 Green bonuses
If, at the end of your turn, you meet the requirements, that noble automatically visits you.
You don’t spend anything to claim a noble.
Simply meet the requirements and gain the points.
Token Limit
One rule new players often forget:
You may never have more than 10 gem tokens in your hand.
If you exceed the limit after taking gems, you must immediately return tokens until you’re back to 10.
How the Game Ends
As soon as a player reaches 15 Prestige Points:
- Finish the current round.
- Ensure all players have taken the same number of turns.
- Count Prestige Points.
The player with the most points wins.
If there’s a tie, the tied player with the fewest purchased development cards wins.
Splendor Tips
While Splendor is easy to learn, a few simple strategies can improve your chances of winning.
Focus on Discounts Early
Buying a few inexpensive cards early often pays off later.
Reserve cards with low gem counts at the start before someone else can take them, eg 5 gems, can get 2 points cards.
Watch the Noble Requirements
Nobles can provide valuable points without costing additional gems.
Keep an eye on which colors you need to attract them.
Reserve Key Cards
If an opponent is clearly aiming for a valuable card, reserving it can slow them down while giving you a useful gold token. Or, if a valuable card requires less tokens to purchase, reserve that first.
Build Efficiently
I’ve found it’s best to spend the first few rounds getting the easy resource cards but with the plan that these are working towards a specific higher points card and/or aiming towards achieving a noble card. This makes achieving the higher-valued cards easier to purchase.
