Really Loud Librarians Overview
Really Loud Librarians is simple: your team is trying to advance a librarian pawn around a racetrack board faster than the opposing team. However, unlike traditional roll-and-move games, your movement is fueled entirely by your vocabulary and speed.
What sets this apart from basic word-association games is its unique moving chain mechanism. Instead of just tracking a single letter, your team pawn is pulled along in a plastic chain of rings that highlights three available letters at any given time.
The game remains incredibly straightforward to teach, fast to play, and a fantastic option for large gatherings or family game nights.

How to Play Really Loud Librarians
Setting up and teaching the game takes less than two minutes, making it an excellent option for large gatherings or family game nights.
1. Draw a Category
One team draws a card to reveal a specific category (for example: “Things that are sticky” or “Items found in a grocery store”).
2. Start the Timer
Flip the 60-second sand timer. Your team is now officially on the clock and must act simultaneously.
3. Shout and Move
Team members shout out words fitting the category. Crucially, the words must begin with one of the letters currently visible inside your team’s moving track chain.
4. Shift the Letters
Every time someone calls out a correct word, you instantly advance the chain forward. This constantly changes the available letters on the track, forcing your team to instantly adapt your brainpower to new letters mid-turn.
Why I Love Really Loud Librarians
I am a solid party game fan, I enjoy the laughter and the banter that party games bring, and this is a classic party game. It’s also fun for families because
- No Waiting Around: Because you are playing in teams and everyone is shouting out answers at the same time, there is zero analysis paralysis. It’s pure, unfiltered fun!.
- Scales Beautifully: While you can play it with 2 players, it truly shines at higher player counts (up to 12) where the room turns into a hilarious shouting match of ridiculous time-pressured answers.
- Bonus Token Strategy: It has an ongoing strategy; as the game progresses, bonus tokens are placed on random letters.
- If you find words matching these letters, your team banks extra points—but you only get to keep them if your team wins the overall round.
My only con for this game is the plastic chain piece; it doesn’t move and flex around the corners so easily. You have to use two hands to straighten it out or bend it, and when you are pushed for time, I find this a bit annoying. All pieces/components of the game are made with high-quality, sturdy pieces.
