If you’re looking for a board game that blends strategy, suspense and portability, Deep Sea Adventure is a standout. Designed by Oink Games, this game invites 2–6 players (ages 8+) to don their diving gear, share a single air tank in a cramped submarine, and dive into the depths for hidden sea-treasures—while watching the oxygen meter tick down.
Because the box is ultra-small and setup is quick, it’s an ideal travel game for holidays or quick family game nights. One reviewer noted it “fits in your coat pocket” and called it “one of my main games I get out on the table for newbies.”

How to Play Deep Sea Adventure
Setup
- Submarine: Place the little submarine in the middle of the table.
- Treasure path: Then shuffle all the treasure chips and line them up in a trail from the submarine, like stepping stones going out to sea. Start with the lowest numbers closest to the sub and the highest numbers furthest away.
- Players: Each player proceeds to take a diver pawn and puts it on the submarine.
- Air meter: Set the air track to 25 (the shared air supply for everyone).
On Your Turn
- Roll and move: On your turn roll both dice (each shows 1–3). Move your diver that many steps forward or backward along the treasure path. When approaching another explorers chip, you jump over them and DO NOT count their chip.
- When you have stopped moving, select one of these option:
- You either do nothing or
- Pick up the ruins chip. But do not flip it over and then fill in the location with a blank chip and place beneath your explorer.
But remember in Deep Sea Adventure, every treasure you carry slows you down—on your next roll you deduct 1 less air for each treasure your hold.
- Place a Ruins chip. If you’re holding a ruins chip you collected this round and you land on a blank chip, you may place one of your ruins chips on that space.
To do this, swap the blank chip you landed on with one of your ruins chips, and return the blank chip to the supply (the bank). - Watch the air:
- The moment anyone picks up treasure, the shared air starts running out.
- At the start of every player’s turn, reduce the air by the number of treasures everyone is carrying.
- When the air reaches zero, the round ends immediately.
- Turn back:
- Declare if you will turn back or not, “I’m heading back to the submarine.” If you roll the dice without declaring, you must move in the same direction as the previous turn.
- You can only change direction once per round, so choose wisely.
- If you don’t make it back before the air runs out, you drop all your treasures back where you found them.
End of a Round
- When the air runs out or all players return to the submarine, the round ends.
- Divers who made it safely back keep their treasures.
- Divers who didn’t make it back lose theirs.
- Refill the path with the remaining treasure chips.
- Play three rounds total.
How do you win in Deep Sea Adventure
After the third round, add up the numbers on your treasure chips.
The diver with the highest total treasure value wins.
(Tie? The one who made it back to the sub most often wins.)
Tips and Notes for Deep Sea Adventure
- Talk together about when to turn back—it’s fun to tease each other about being greedy.
- Younger kids? I recommend for the first round to make it a demo game. So they understand the concept of when to turn back and how the oxygen can run out fast if everyone has ruined chips. I think even for my 14-year-old he didn’t quite grasp how quick it can run out and that he was so far off getting back to the submarine and losing all his ruin chips.
- Play on the go: The game’s tiny box makes it perfect for travel, holidays, or restaurant waits.
- Easy to learn & quick to play: The rules are simple, and the short game time makes it very accessible.
- Built-in tension & decision making: The “push-your-luck” element (how deep to dive, when to turn) creates excitement and gives players agency.
- Portable format: Because of its small size and quick setup, you can pack it for travel, camping, or car journeys—what we call a “travel game.”
- Social interaction & fun theme: The shared air tank in Deep Sea Adventure introduces a subtle social dynamic, trying to tell people not to take treasure and then counting how many each player has and can spark laughter and banter.
- Suitable for mixed ages: The age rating is 8+, and I also play with adults only frequently.

Frequently Asked Questions - Deep Sea Adventure
A: The official age rating is 8+ years. Some families report success with younger children (7-year-olds) if you play cooperatively or guide them through the risk vs. reward decisions.
.
A: It supports 2 to 6 players. Many reviewers suggest the game shines with 4-6 players because the shared submarine/air dynamic is more fun with more interaction.
A: Around 30 minutes for a full game (three rounds) with 3–4 players. With 2 players it might run a bit faster; with more players maybe slightly longer.
A: It is competitive: each player is trying to bring back the most treasure. The twist is the shared air tank means one player’s greed can affect everyone. Creating social tension and maybe some influencing or convincing people to not take treasure if you’re too far away from the submarine.
A: It uses “push-your-luck”, dice-movement, and shared resource (air tank) mechanics. The path of treasures increases in value the deeper you go, but movement slows with treasure, and the risk of running out of air rises.
A: Yes, it works for 2 players, but many players feel the dynamics (especially social/competitive tension) are stronger with 4–6 players.
“Played it at work several times with maximum players … it was great and wildly unpredictable.”
A: Many reviewers say yes—especially if you want a fun, quick, travel-friendly game. One caveat: long-term depth is moderate (once you’ve played several times, the “optimal” strategies emerge).
- For younger players, you might remove the highest-value treasure chips initially to lower risk.
- Emphasise “when you turn back” rule so kids grasp the decision point.
- Use it as a travel game: pack it along for holiday or road-trip and play between other activities.
- Encourage light banter about oxygen and daring dives—it adds to the fun.
- Make the first time playing a demo round. As it is really surprising how fast the oxygen can run out. Even my 14 yr old was a bit put out on the first round knowing full well he had no show of returning home. in time.
