2. The New Components When I set this up, I replace the standard number tokens with double-sided ones. One side is yellow (productive), and the other is red (reduced productivity due to pollution). You’ll also need the Greenhouse Gas Tracker to keep an eye on the island’s health.
3. The “Green Tax” Strategy In my games, I’ve noticed a “Green Tax” rule can be a lifesaver. When a 7 is rolled, players can choose to pay a resource to lower the GHG levels instead of moving the robber. It’s a brilliant way to introduce the concept of “offsetting” your footprint.
My Take: Is it Fun?
Absolutely. It adds a layer of “cooperative-competition” that the original game lacks. You still want to win, but you can’t win if the island is destroyed first! It’s one of the best hybrid educational games for teaching complex topics like climate change in a way that actually sticks.

By using the print and play (PNP) version from PNP Arcade, I was able to jump into a showdown between a Barbarian and a Moon Elf without spending a dime on the box set.

How I Play Dice Throne
1. Choose Your Hero
In the free version, I usually pick between the heavy-hitting Barbarian or the agile Moon Elf. Each hero has their own board with special abilities and a custom deck of cards.
2. The Roll Phase
This is where the strategy kicks in. On my turn, I roll my dice up to three times (just like Yahtzee!). I’m looking for specific combinations—like a “Large Straight” or matching symbols—to activate my hero’s offensive abilities.
3. Attack & Defend
Once I activate an ability, I deal damage to my opponent. But it’s not over yet! My opponent gets to roll their Defensive Ability to try and block, heal, or even counter-attack.
4. Strategic Manipulation
I use my Combat Points (CP) to play cards from my hand. These allow me to upgrade my hero’s abilities or—my personal favorite—manipulate the dice to turn a bad roll into a winning strike.

If you’re worried about not having fancy “hero dice,” don’t be! I simply grabbed a pack of standard six-sided dice from a local $1 shop.
Target/Walmart: Check the toy or board game aisle for bulk dice.
Dollar Shops: Often have sets of 5-10 dice for just a buck.
Pro-Tip: Since the PNP version uses standard numbers, any D6 (six-sided die) will work perfectly.

I’ve found that Secret Hitler is one of the best social deduction games for a big group. It’s a high-stakes party game that turns your living room into a 1930s German parliament. The tension is real because I never truly know who I can trust—my best friend could be a Liberal ally or the hidden leader of a Fascist takeover.
How I Play: The Flow of Power
1. The Secret Identities I start by dealing everyone a secret envelope. The Liberals are the majority, but they are uncoordinated. The Fascists are the minority, but they have the advantage of knowing exactly who is on their team.
2. Legislative Sessions Each round, a President and a Chancellor are elected. I draw three policy cards, discard one, and pass two to the Chancellor. They then choose one to enact. This is where the “funny confusion” starts—did the President give the Chancellor two Fascist cards, or is the Chancellor lying about what they received?
3. The Temptation of Power As the Fascist track grows, the President gains special powers, like the ability to investigate another player’s party or even execute someone. I’ve seen many “Liberal” Presidents pass a Fascist policy just to get that power, which makes the social deduction even more chaotic!
4. The Winning Move
Liberal Victory: We win if we pass five Liberal policies or successfully assassinate Hitler.
Fascist Victory: They win if they pass six Fascist policies or if Hitler is elected Chancellor after three Fascist policies are already on the board.
Why I Recommend the Free Version
You don’t need a fancy wooden box to enjoy this game. Because it is released under a Creative Commons license, I can easily use a free board games download to print my own set at home. It’s a great way to test the game before buying a premium copy.
Pro-Tip: If you are playing with a large group (7–10 players), the game becomes even more intense. I suggest using a “no-talking” rule during the President and Chancellor’s policy selection to prevent any non-verbal cues from giving away the secret roles!

On your turn, roll both dice. You can use the numbers in two ways:
The Sum: Move one checker the total of both dice.
The Split: Move two different checkers—one for each die number.
3. The Risk: Blots vs. Anchors
This is where the game is won or lost.
The Blot: If I leave a single token on a triangle (a “blot”), my opponent can land on it, “hit” it, and send it back to the start.
The Anchor: If I have two or more tokens on a triangle, I’ve made a “point.” My tokens are safe, and I’ve created a wall that my opponent cannot land on.
4. The Great Escape
Once all 15 of my checkers are in my “Home Board” (the final quadrant), I can start bearing off. I roll the dice and remove checkers from the corresponding triangles until they are all gone.
My Pro-Tips for “Print & Play” Success
If you’ve used a free printable Backgammon board, you might not have the traditional plastic checkers. Don’t let that stop you! I’ve successfully played using:
Coins: Quarters vs. Dimes.
Buttons: Two different colors work perfectly.
Spare Parts: Borrow tokens or counters from other board games.
Parent Tip: Because it involves counting pips and weighing probabilities, Backgammon is an incredible “stealth math” tool for older kids. It teaches them to think three moves ahead while managing the frustration of a bad dice roll!
